Forty powerful and haunting voices echo over acoustic guitar, filling the historic Moore Theater with a mighty spirit. These 40 youth are crying out their anthem of mourning and solidarity honoring their deceased and struggling family members and friends impacted by the tsunami that ravaged the Pacific Islands. The theater seats and backstage corridors are inhabited by a wildly eclectic mix of educators, activists, artists, youth and elders from the greater Seattle area. They all move together, humbled and inspired, holding close to their hearts every single note sung by these brave teenagers. This moment immediately evolves into a permanent memory, echoing in everyone’s hearts, and undoubtedly will continue to echo for the rest of their lives.

It is the night of October 25, 2009. The decade-strong Seattle-based non-profit organization, Arts Corps, is proudly introducing its national partner, Music National Service, and MusicianCorps, the program they are piloting together in Seattle with an epic benefit concert celebrating culture, music and service.

When the four MusicianCorps Seattle Fellows came back from the Music National Service training in San Francisco, they were fully prepared to apply the momentum of this national movement into local action. As the fellows went to work in their respective service communities, Arts Corps Board President Vivian Phillips challenged the newly formed team and supportive affiliates to create an unforgettable benefit concert for the city of Seattle to introduce and celebrate the partnership between the local and national organizations (Arts Corps and Music National Service), and to create it as an event that would not only mobilize local action and awareness of the national movement, but would highlight the richly diverse music and culture we have in Seattle in a way that has never happened before.

What came to be was an unforgettably moving and powerful show, “Why Music,” at the historic Moore Theatre on October 25, 2009 featuring our four remarkably talented MusicianCorps fellows and 80 performers representing all ages and diverse music genres. These local musicians and performers gave their time and talent in support of the vision and mission of MusicianCorps. Each performance was moving and embodied a deep commitment to service through music. It was an incredible launch to this powerful movement that is happening in Seattle and across our nation. If you missed it, you will be able to experience this powerful show when it airs on the Seattle Channel. Sign up for our mailing list to be alerted when this video is released.

We strongly encourage you to learn more about each of these remarkable artists.
