After-School and Out-of-School Classes

The bulk of Arts Corps programming consists of after-school and out-of-school classes. This program setting is particularly conducive to fun, creative exploration and engaging students for a sustained period of time in thematic or project-based learning.

Arts Corps seeks yearlong commitments for our after-school and out-of-school arts programs with the goal of building longer, established partnerships. We bring in new partners at the beginning of each school year, with decisions made during the summer for our annual partnerships.

Arts Corps' after-school and out-of-school partners include public and private schools, community centers, foster care centers and other well-established youth-serving organizations that bring in Arts Corps as a primary component of their after-school programming. We work closely with our program partners to best shape the class to the needs of their youth.

Structure and Expectations

  • Sessions per week: 2
  • Time per session: 1-2 hours
  • Hours per quarter: 16 or more
  • Expectations: Teaching artists are placed at partner sites for the duration of the program year and serve the same group of kids for an entire quarter.
  • Benefits of program type: Because of their structure and setting, after-school and out-of-school courses often allow for the deepest level of engagement for students in project-based or thematic learning. For example, students can prepare a performance or production over the course of the school year, or make a recording or poetry book.

Course Offerings

After-school and out-of-school class offerings reflect the diversity of our teaching artists as well as the varied interests of our students, ages 5 to 19. We consistently offer a wide range of after-school programming in dance, digital media, visual art, music, poetry/spoken word and theatre in a variety of settings. Some staples by discipline include:

Dance
Young dancers can gain self-confidence and skills while they learn the history, foundation and fundamentals of the dance form practiced. They are asked to share their own talents as well as work together, building strong teamwork through collaboration on choreography and group performances.
*Offerings include Brazilian, Capoeira, hip-hop and break dance.
Digital Media
In digital media classes - spanning visual and audio technology - students will explore their communities and capture their own personal stories, working collaboratively to create a film, photo series or recording for exhibition.
*Offerings include digital photography, video production/filmmaking, as well as interdisciplinary forms such as animation, theatre/multimedia, audio recording and hip-hop production.
Music
In music classes, young people realize and experience the power of their own voices through rhythm and song. Students discover what is distinctive about themselves in an intuitive and spontaneous way and learn to bring their truest selves into the studio or onto the stage.
*Offerings include African drumming, choir and voice & songwriting.
Poetry/Spoken Word
In our poetry classes, students work to creatively interpret their environment and articulate their experiences and inner truths through writing. They are given the opportunity to share their stories and hone their voices while exploring an array of poetic styles, the sound of language and the power of poetry when read aloud.
* Offerings include "Writes of Passage" and slam poetry as well as interdisciplinary classes such as lyrical hip-hop production and visual poetry.
Theatre
Theatre classes offer ways for students to fully embody their experience through experimentation, props, craft and performance.
*Offerings include Shakespeare, puppetry, theatrical storytelling, circus arts and musical theatre.
Visual Art
Visual art classes are a creative journey into a world of imaginative possibilities. On this journey, students will discover the way they see and move through the world through the process of expressing themselves while learning basic visual art techniques specific to the form being studied.
*Offerings include "Exploration in Art," creative clay sculpture, cartooning & illustration as well as interdisciplinary classes such as animation, digital photography and visual poetry.
